Death in Custody Course
We need to revamp our approach to the agitated patient.
“Death in Custody” is CAPCE-accredited (EMS), 3-hour online course focused on improving the management of the agitated patient, reducing the risk of death and avoiding the major pitfalls of restraint and sedation. Utilizing footage of actual incidents to inform the discussion, the course explores the controversy surrounding “excited delirium,” the dangers of prone restraint, and the role of sedation. It also examines how cognitive distortions affect decisions in high-stress situations. The course presents a restructured framework, grounded in evidence and real-world experience, built on three key elements: de-escalation, restraint and sedation. This approach reduces risk for patients and responders and decreases legal exposure for responders. The course instructor, Eric Jaeger, JD, NRP, is a nationally recognized expert on de-escalation, restraint and sedation.
